Field Internship in Public Health

Description

This internship is strongly recommended for students intending to pursue careers in Public Health. Students can earn up to 2 credits to satisfy electives requirements in the Public Health curriculum.Students are placed for internship or field experience in selected governmental or nongovernmental organizations that are involved in advancing the health of communities, including underserved, and global populations through education, research, outreach, and service, both locally, nationally, and globally, through collaborative public health approaches to health promotion and disease prevention and intervention. Students are selected by the adviser for this course on the basis of academic preparation and suitability for the field experience, subject to the availability of the site. This course facilitates valuable work experience and increases knowledge of specific career opportunities. Placements are semester-long (90 hours) and provide the opportunity to observe a public health professional in practice, complete a project that is mutually beneficial to the student and the organization, and synthesize knowledge and skills into public health practice. Course requirements include two mini progress reports, and submission of a final report covering the activities participated in during the experience. The student is also required to submit a timesheet and two supervisor evaluations, one in the middle of the internship and the other at the end. The final grade is determined by the departmental adviser. All internships must be completed before graduation to be included in the student?s degree certification.
